 The most important and famous ones are at Giza ,on the west bank of the Nile River. They were between 2660 B.C. and 2560 B.C. for the kings Cheops, Chephren (Khafre), and Mycerinus. They were meant to house the pharaohs’ bodies and serve as reminders of their almighty power.

UNIT 16 :7 WONDERS OF THE WORLDThe Hanging Gardens Of Babylon Located in Iraq ,about 89 km south of Baghdad. They were built by King Nebuchadnezzar in the 6th century B.C to please .On these were planted gardens of tropical flowers and trees and avenues of palms . The Great Pyramid of Giza(2660 B.C – 2560 B.C) The most important and famous ones are at Giza ,on the west bank of the Nile River. They were between 2660 B.C. and 2560 B.C. for the kings Cheops, Chephren (Khafre), and Mycerinus. They were meant to house the pharaohs’ bodies and serve as reminders of their almighty power. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia(mid - 5th century B.C) It was sculpted (mid- 5th century ) by Phidias and placed in temple of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. Standing almost 12m tall ,statue survived until the 5th century It was built (about 280 B.C) on an island in the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt and was a famous ancient lighthouse standing more than 134m tall .It was destroyed in the 14th centuryThe Lighthouse of Alexandria(about 280 B.C)The Temple of Artemis at Epheseus It was built ,rebuilt ,and enlarged from time to time .It was built (about 430 B.C ) by contributions from all the great cities of Asia and it took 120 years .It was destroyed by the Goths in 262 A.D. The Colossus of Rhodes It was a 30m bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios, erected about 280 B.C to guard the entrance to the harbor at Rhodes .It Was destroyed about 55 years later.The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus It derived its name from King Mausolus of Caria in Asia Minor. After his death in the middle of the 4th century B.C. Some relics of the original Mausoleum are preserved in the British Museum NEW 7 WONDERS OF THE WORLDThe Roman Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) This great amphitheater in the centre of Rome was built to give favors to successful legionnaires Its design concept still stands to this very day, and virtually every modern sports stadium some 2,000 years later still bears the irresistible imprint of the Colosseum's original design. The Taj Mahal (1630 A.D.) It was built on the orders of Shah Jahan, the fifth Muslim Mogul emperor to honor the memory of his beloved late wife. Built out of white marble and standing in formally laid-out walled gardens, the Taj Mahal is regarded as the most perfect jewel of Muslim art in India The Great Wall of China (220 B.C and 1368 - 1644 A.D.) The Great Wall of China was built to link existing fortifications into a united defense system. It is the largest man-made monument ever to have been built Many thousands of people must have given their lives to build this colossal construction.The Pyramid at Chichén Itzá (before 800 A.D.), Mexico Chichén Itzá, the most famous Mayan temple city Its various structures - the pyramid of Kukulkan, the Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars. The pyramid itself was the last, and arguably the greatest, of all Mayan temples.Christ Redeemer (1931 ) This statue of Jesus stands some 38 meters tall, atop the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Brazilian Costa and created by French sculptor Landowski. The statue took five years to construct Machu Picchu (1460-1470) In the 15th century, the Incan Emperor Pachacútec built a city in the clouds on the mountain known as Machu Picchu ("old mountain“) . It was probably abandoned by the Incas and rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.Petra (9 B.C. - 40 A.D) Petra was the glittering capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV (9 B.C. to 40 A.D.). Masters of water technology, the Nabataeans provided their city with great tunnel constructions and water chambers . Today, the Palace Tombs of Petra are impressive examples of Middle Eastern culture.
