I. Read the passage below and answer the questions given.
Up to the beginning of the twenty-first century, there have been many advances in science and technology which affect almost all areas of human life. Benzene, an important discovery in chemistry, is the starting point in the production of many dyes, perfumes and explosives. Together with television, motion pictures have shown viewers other people’s cultures and broadened their awareness of different lifestyles. In addition, the development of medical technology has brought more benefits to people’s health. It provides women with effective birth-control methods. The laser beam can be used in treating cancer, and the scanner can help doctors diagnose diseases.
Applied scientists have invented the labor-saving devices for the home, such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and dishwashers. These devices have helped women save time in doing their housework and given them more freedom to pursue a career or acquire an education. Telephone lines make communication among people easier and faster. The computer has played an important part in our modern times. The electric mail and the internet, which are closely connected with the computer, have become very popular means of communication around the world.
Scientific progress is constantly opening up new horizons, bringing us new needs and new opportunities. Enjoying the benefits of scientific and technological achievements, most people have a higher living standard with modern conveniences.
