( 10 points) Without the Nile River, the great civilization of ancient Egypt may never have existed. Until about nine thousand years ago, all of Egypt was under water. When the climate began to turn dry, tribes moved from North Africa to land near the river. Small villages appeared along the banks of the Nile. Each village had a chief who would battle other villages. Around 3300 BCE, these tribes came together to form the civilization of ancient Egypt. One reason ancient Egypt was built around the Nile River was because its yearly flood made farming possible. The flood was so important that religious leaders would perform ceremonies that were believed to cause the river to rise and flood. The flood made the land very good for growing grains such as wheat and barley. Farmers began to plant these crops in November, right after the flood. Because of the Nile, they were usually able to grow a lot of crops. If the grain was not used, it would be stored for later use. Historians believe this is one reason that ancient Egypt became a powerful and wealthy nation. The Nile also served as an important means of transportation. Ancient Egypt did not have the wheel, so there were no wagons or carts back then. However, ancient Egyptians learned to build boats so that when the Nile flooded they could use the river as a main road throughout Egypt. It is said that without the Nile, there would be no pyramids. This is because historians think that the huge stones were carried on the river by boat. This would explain why the pyramids sit close to the river on its west bank. 66. ( 5 points) The Seashore Ecosystem The seashore or coastline is the unique area where seawater borders land to create a diverse and very important ecosystem. It is special in that the freshwater carried along by rivers and streams flows into the ocean and mixes with salt water to provide rich nutrients and food to a variety of marine plants and animals. The wildlife along the coast is part of a never-ending food chain as each tiny insect depends on its nourishment on other even smaller creatures; therefore, any human interference in the life cycle of the seashore will cause irreparable damage to the environment in the long run. To better understand how people can destroy seashores without any chance of recovery one needs to take a better look at how this area is formed. Seashores are ever-changing environments that depend on the constant movement of tidal waves. According to the placement of the moon in relation to the sun, the waves that pound and beat the shore can either come up to the land or move away from it. This movement is called a tide, and when the sea rises and drowns the land, there is high tide, while the reverse is a low tide. The area of the seashore that is submerged during high tides and above water at low tides is called the inter-tidal zone. Subtidal zones are always under water. Both these areas, as well as the upper shores support an abundance of marine wildlife. Many types of seaweed cling to rocks by using their ‘holdfast’ at the base of the stem, while others live in deep water and are often washed ashore by high tides. Several crabs and prawns feed on seaweed, while humans also use this plant as food, fertilizer or medicine. Sea otters often wrap their bodies with seaweed before dozing off so as not to accidentally move into the ocean while sleeping. Other fascinating creatures are sea anemones, sponges and corals, which may look like delicate and colorful flowers, but are actually animals. Anemones catch and eat other animals with their parts like flowers, while corals are indeed hardened colonies of marine creatures, which offer rich feeding grounds for fish and also regulate the water’s carbon dioxide content. Seashores are popular areas for people to come and collect shells, which used to provide protection for soft-bodied creatures called mollusks. Mollusks can move at a snail’s pace only. This slow movement is due to the fact that they have only one muscular footlike body part to help them move along. Commonly eaten mollusks are clams, oysters and scallops, as well as squid and octopuses, which come without hard shells. Besides mollusks, people also gather sea urchins, which look like balls covered with many long and sharp needles. The small sea urchins use their needles to scrape and dig holes inside rocks, where they lay their eggs. These eggs are a very sought-after restaurant delicacy. 76. _______ Seashores are unique areas because the combination of freshwater and salt water supports the existence of diverse wildlife. 77. _______ Inter-tidal zone is an area that is under water only when the tide is high. 78. _______ If there was no seaweed on the seashore, otters would lack vital support while taking a rest 79. _______ Anemones and corals are plants. 80. _______ Both mollusks and sea urchins have a similar body structure.
