 1 PART A - PROBLEM
Nowadays, English has become a popular language all over the world, it is
an essential communication tool in all areas of social activities. In the era of
globalization, the need to communicate between people of all countries is
imperative.
Learning a foreign language is more difficult than other subjects. Currently,
the curriculum and textbooks are very innovative, but the difficulty is also higher,
requiring students in the learning process, in addition to mastering language
knowledge, to master the 4 skills of listening - speaking - reading - writing, which
emphasizes the formation and development of students' communication ability.
For students in grades 8, 9 is already difficult, for students in grades 6 and 7 it is
even more difficult because they have just moved from primary school and are not
familiar with how to learn and a large amount of knowledge, communication skills
are still lacking. very limited, they are very afraid to use English in communication
due to various reasons such as: shyness, reticence, fear of saying the wrong thing
will be ridiculed, incorrect pronunciation, not enough vocabulary to speak or do
not understand the grammar structure, sentence patterns ..etc How to improve
the above situation and attract students study, be passionate and love the subject
more. I have used very effectively the combination of methods in active teaching
in each lesson, during the school year. And focus on forging skills for students as
well as fostering good students because that is a very necessary issue to create
high-ranking students. By his practical experience over a period of time, he has
successfully applied the methods of forging skills for students, although they have
been applied to different grades and students, but within the framework of In this
topic, I would like to introduce and go deeper into "Speaking skills for secondary
school students". Good organization of speaking practice will help overcome these
limitations. That is also the reason for this topic.
2 PART B. PROBLEM AND SOLUTION
 I. The current situation of teaching and learning English at Dong Lac
Secondary School
 1. Advantages
With the attention of the industry leaders, the specialist in charge of the
junior high school division of the District Department of Education and Training.
With the enthusiastic care and support of the School Board of Directors.
The school's English teachers are qualified in terms of training qualifications
and are always enthusiastic in teaching. Participating fully in seminars, seminars
and professional training courses organized by the Department and the Education
Department.
The school has been recognized as a National Standard School, so most
teachers are always aware that maintaining the educational quality of a standard
school is very important.
Facilities and equipment for teaching and learning English are quite
complete. The school is equipped with subject classrooms with computers,
projectors, a Lab with Internet connection and the use of soft books in learning and
teaching English. Most students have full textbooks when studying.
Parents also realize that their children's learning is very important, so they
regularly create conditions for students to develop to their full potential.
 2. Limitations and causes of limitations
 2.1. Teacher
The quality of the English subject at the school every year is often low.
After a period of teaching, the teacher noticed that the level of the students was
uneven, there were students with good academic ability, but most of them were
very weak. Although they have studied English for many years in primary school,
but English is only an elective subject, so they do not focus on learning English,
even, especially, there are students who do not know anything, cannot speak.
floating a simple English sentence.
 3 2.2. Students
Currently, the majority of students studying English are very weak, due to
the loss of basic knowledge, they are weak in skills, not diligently passionate about
the subject, grammar and basic vocabulary are still lacking. too little does not meet
the requirements of the subject.
They do not know how to learn to achieve high efficiency, have no sense of
self-discipline in learning, slow and low ability to acquire basic language
knowledge, rote learning and inability to apply knowledge into practice.
Some students, when studying English, do not pay attention to the lecture,
do not study old lessons at home and do not have the habit of preparing new
lessons when they come to class.
Secondary school students at Dong Lac Secondary School are weak in all
four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Especially speaking skills
are still weak. They are very shy to speak English in class, are not brave in
studying because they do not understand the lesson deeply, have not firmly
grasped the knowledge, lack of confidence, passiveness and shy, reserved
mentality, afraid that others will laugh when they do. say incorrectly. Most
students tend to pronounce English in a Vietnameseized way, have little chance to
meet and communicate with native speakers, so their pronunciation is not standard,
or they are shy and the biggest weakness is fear of speaking. wrong, so most of
them are still shy and reserved.
II. Measures: Practice speaking skills for secondary school students
 1. Measure 1: Practice pronunciation for students
 - In the process of communicating in English, in order for others to
understand what they are saying, students need to pronounce words and sentences
clearly.
 - When introducing materials and sentence patterns, teachers need to read
correctly both phonetics and intonation for students to imitate because this is a
basic element in teaching listening and speaking, students must pronounce
correctly. because if they pronounce it wrong, the listener will misunderstand what
4 the speaker means, and the wrong pronunciation will become a habit that will have
a bad influence in the process of learning and communicating later. So when
teaching words, I tried to teach students to read words correctly by using soft
books with each word being transcribed, accented and for students to hear the
pronunciation of native speakers, then students Repeat it a few times so you can
read the words correctly.
 - Practice for students to have the habit of reading concatenation.
 Example: Get-up ['gổtʌp]
 - It's a pencil. /itzəpensl/ .
 2. Measure 2: Train students to use correct intonation
 - Intonation is simply understood as the rise and fall of the voice. Listeners
can misunderstand or completely misunderstand the speaker's meaning if the
speaker uses the wrong intonation, because intonation is compared as the soul of
the sentence.
 - It should be noted: stress, rhythm, phonetics, and intonation are important
factors in speaking English. It helps listeners easily understand the content of the
conversation
 - Usually in English, the main stress is often placed on words that have
important content meanings in the sentence.
 - Intonation: raise your voice at the end of Yes-No questions and lower your
voice at Wh-questions
+/ With Yes/No questions, the intonation is low at the beginning and
gradually increased at the end of the sentence.
For example: Do you like playing football?
+/ Raise your voice at the end of a definite but meaningful question.
For example: You really think so?
+/ For question types with question words, lower your voice at the end of
the sentence.
For example: What is your hobby?
How far is it from your house to school?
5 After instructing students on how to use intonation I usually give them
practice by listening to the tape and asking them to repeat it in the correct tone and
intonation, I remind them to try to speak fluently right away. Don't be afraid to be
wrong the first time, if wrong, I will read it again next time to make it right.
 3. Measure 3: Organize activities in pairs-groups:
 - To effectively implement the student-centered approach, it is necessary to
organize for all students to participate in learning under the supervision of the
teacher's class. In addition, teachers need to guide students to practice their English
speaking skills in many forms such as pairs, groups, and teacher-to-class
conversations. This is the most effective and ideal activity during speaking
practice. All students will be working at the same time. Students learn from each
other during practice, it is an opportunity to share information and learn from each
other what they do not know, and at the same time, the teacher can easily control
students by walking around the class, listen and help when needed. If so, the
practice of speaking English will be more effective.
 4. Measure 4: Apply different types of exercises to develop speaking
skills
 a. Yes-no question: Question to guess information
+ The teacher gives a title to practice.
6 + The teacher provides some suggested words, background knowledge, the
teacher models and then lets the students speak freely.
 b. Ask and answer: ask and answer
+ Students can practice by themselves in pairs
+ If practicing in groups, the group leader asks some questions, other
members of the group have the task of answering.
 c. Dialogue build:
+ The teacher has basic suggested words or pictures to show -> students
build a dialogue and then practice speaking
 d. Substitution drills: Replace learned dialogues or problems with grammar
and vocabulary with new lines, grammar problems, and vocabulary.
 e. Onion ring:
+ The teacher gives the topic to practice.
The teacher begins by asking a certain student a question. The student that
answered the teacher's question was then tasked with asking another question to
the next student. This student is responsible for answering and asking a question
for a third friend, so this form of chain practice is continued.
+ Thematic questions may not need to develop into immediate dialogue.
 7 f. Picture stories :
+ The teacher collects pictures and pictures with content relevant to the
program studied.
+ The teacher models, plays roles in the comics, uses the suggestions in the
pictures as words for the characters. Students observe and practice role-playing the
characters in the picture.
+ The teacher can ask students to rearrange the pictures according to the
order of events of the story. -> Students then look at the picture and retell the main
content.
+ The teacher can suggest with questions
+ The teacher can ask students to match the pictures with the story: Write
the story on the cardboard, arrange the pictures and the story in a messy way ->
Ask the students to observe the pictures and match the narration in order. of the
episode taught in the picture is also the order of the narrative written on that cover
 g. Role play :
+ Role-playing games to reinforce students' understanding
+ Divide each group to play a scene according to the theme requested by the
teacher
 5. Measure 5: Practice speaking skills in project presentations
As you know, with 45 minutes for an hour in class, with a lot of activities,
the teacher must be very flexible to be able to teach all the basic knowledge in
class and have very little time to practice. focus on students. So the project
presentation is very necessary. With this presentation, the children have time to
practice and develop skills such as: Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing,
language especially speaking skills.
 * The principles that I applied to students giving good presentations.
 - Students must prepare the presentation carefully and in accordance with
the project content.
 - Create confidence and comfort for students.
 - Consolidate basic knowledge related to the presentation topic.
8 - Simplify the content of the exercises and gradually increase the difficulty
in a way that is suitable for the students' level.
 - Always let the children study in groups or pairs to create rhythmic
coordination, unity and certainty about the knowledge they still remember.
 - Regularly check the preparation and the tasks assigned by the teacher in
the previous period.
 - Promptly encourage and praise to create interest and interest in speaking of
students.
 2. Illustrations in classroom practice sessions
Above I have outlined some measures to practice speaking skills in the 6th
and 7th grade program. Here I would like to illustrate with some specific lessons
 * English 7 Unit 1 - Speaking:
The requirement of this lesson is that students must be able to talk about
their hobby and the benefits of that hobby. Request: Work in groups. Ask one
another the following questions. Then present your partner’s answer to the class.
9 Onion ring: Students stand in a circle asking and answering in a circle. Then
the teacher called on some students to talk about their friend's hobby.
 1. What is your favorite hobby?
 2. What are its benefits?
 Example:
My friend Mi's favorite hobby is collecting stamps. It helps her be more
patient.
English 7: Unit 6 – A closer look 1. Activity 3: Work in pairs. Answer the
questions about your school.
 1. Can you name some gifted students in your school?
 2. When does the first-term test take place?
 3. Do you have to take an entrance examination to study at your school?
 4. What kind of facilities does your school have?
 5. What types of outdoor activities do you like to take part in?
 English 7: Unit 9: Lesson 4: Communication
Students practice in pairs, ask and answer, then record their friend's answer.
Students talk about you in front of the class.
 Yes No
 1. Do you go to school on foot?
 2. Do you use public transport?
 3. Do you use low energy light bulbs at home?
 4. Do you use solar energy to warm water?
 5. Do you turn off the lights when going to bed?
 6. Do you turn off the TV when not watching it?
10 - Ask them to speak according to their own ideas, as much as possible by
applying knowledge and vocabulary related to the topic “Films”
 - This is an opportunity for children to practice their language knowledge to
talk about their thoughts on the topic they are studying. In general, the children
were very excited to present their ideas, and the teacher supported them to use the
language in a number of situations that arise.
 - The teacher listens to the students' presentation and promptly corrects
some pronunciation errors for them. Thus, teaching English speaking is not only
taught in lessons with the "Speaking" section, but teachers have to give students
regular speaking skills, throughout English lessons in many different parts of a
single program. Lessons like: A closer look 1, A closer look 2, Communication,
Skills 1, Skills 2 and Looking back and Project too.
