LESSON PLAN
Unit Twelve: WATER SPORTS
SPEAKING
Time: 45 minutes
OBJECTIVES:
Aim(s): By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Talk about different types of water sports
Give opinions and preferences about water sports
Lexical items: Words / phrases related to water sports
Structures: sentences used to talk about sports
METHOD : Integrated, mainly communicative
TEACHING AIDS : textbook, pictures, chalk, board, LCD projector
PROCEDURE:
Teacher’s Activities
Students’ Activities
Lead-in:
T divides the class into 4 groups and gives instructions for the small game they are going to play:
Make a list of the water sports you know. After two minutes the group with the longest list will win the game.
Pre-speaking:
T raises some questions:
How many alternative sources of energy did you learn in the reading passage? What are they?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each energy source?
T gives comments and introduces the speaking topic.
T explains some words in the tasks and shows Ss how to pronounce them correctly.
Vocabulary:
nuclearreactor (n) : lò phản ứng hạt nhân
radiation (n) : sự bức xạ, phóng xạ
ex: a low / high level of radiation (mức độ phóng xạ thấp / cao)
hydroelectricity (n) : thủy điện
run out (v) : hết, cạn kiệt
ex: My patience is running out (tôi không thể kiên nhẫn được nữa)
Our fuel ran out / We ran out of fuel
enormous (adj) = very large, huge, immense
renewable (adj) : có thể thay thế
≠ non-renewable (adj)
Renew (v): replace, make new again, restore to original state
harm (v), (n) :
harmful (adj): có hại
T asks Ss to do task 1.
Task 1. The following statements list some advantages and disadvantages of various sources of energy. Read and tick (ü) the appropriate box A (for the advantages) or D (for the disadvantages), then compare the results with a partner’s.
A
D
Fossil fuels will be exhausted within a relatively short time.
Geothermal heat is available only in a few places in the world.
If the wing does not blow, there is no wind energy.
Water power provides energy without pollution.
A nuclear reactor releases radiation which is dangerous to the environment.
Solar energy is not only plentiful and unlimited but also clean and safe.
It is expensive to build dam for hydroelectricity.
While-speaking:
T has Ss do task 2 in pairs
Task 2. Work in pairs. Talk with your friend about the advantages and disadvantages of using each alternative source of energy, using the suggestions from task 1.
Example:
A: I think / believe that wind power can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Why do you think / believe so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while the wind is abundant and unlimited.
B: I know it is also clean and safe to the environment. However, it is not available when there is no wind.
Useful language: (for expressing ideas)
I think / believe
In my opinion
I don’t think
T selects some pairs to act out the convesations in front of the class. T gives comments.
Post-speaking:
Task 3. Work in groups. Express your belief on the increasing use of alternative sources in the future, using the ideas from task 2.
T selects one or two groups at random and has them act out the conversation in front of the class
T gives comments.
T assigns homework.
Homework: Write down the conversations in task 3 in your notebook + prepare the listening section.
The representative of each group writes down all the water sports they know on a piece of paper .
Ss write down the words and repeat after T
Ss do task 1 in pairs .

Model conversation:
A: I think that nuclear energy can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Why do you think so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while nuclear energy is plentiful and it can provive enough electricity for the world’s needs for hundreds of year.
B: Yes, that’s right. But it can be very dangerous and harmful. You know, a nuclear reactor releases radiation which is very dangerous to the environment. Moreover, it is not easy for us to treat radioactive waste effectively.
.
Selected Ss act out the conversations in pairs. (the others listen and give comments)
Ss work in groups
Model conversation:
A: I think that more and more people will use solar energy in the future?
B: Why do you think so?
A: Because it is available, unlimited and easy to use.
C: But it is not cheap to have devices to get this kind of energy.
D: And we can only have it at specific time of the year.
A: I hope that with the progress of science and technology these problems will be solved in the near future
B: That’s right and then we don’t have to worry about the shortage of energy
C: And our life will be more comfortable with cheap simple devices run on solar energy.
