III. Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions: (5 points)
Urban life has always involved a balancing of opportunities and rewards against dangers and stress: its motivating force is, in fact, money. Opportunities to make more money mean competition and competition causes stress, which is often the most intensive in the biggest cities, where opportunities are greatest. The presence of a large number of people inevitably involves more conflict, more travelling, the overloading of public services and the greater risk of criminals who are drawn to the rich parts of big cities. Crime has always flourished in the relative anonymity of urban life; but today’s ease of movement makes its control more difficult than ever before. City dwellers may become trapped in their homes by the fear of crime around them.
As a defense against these developments, city dwellers tend to use various ways to reduce the pressures on themselves: contacts with other people are generally made brief; doors are kept locked; telephone numbers may be ex-directory; journeys outside the homes are usually hurried, rather than a source of pleasure. Some people may use drugs and alcohol to forget their problems. As a result, all these defensive forms of behaviour are harmful to society in general: they cause widespread loneliness and destroy the community’s concern for its members. Lack of informal social contact and indifference to the misfortunes of other people are amongst the major causes of urban crime.
Present-day architecture and planning have made the human problems of city life much worse. Old-established neighborhoods have been swept away by both public and private organizations, and replaced by huge, ugly, impersonal buildings. People have been forced to leave their familiar homes in order to move to tower blocks which are boring, inconvenient, and fail to provide any setting for human interaction or support. Efforts should be made to conserve human scale of the environment, and to retail familiar landmarks.
71. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The higher crime rate in large cities.
B. The problems of living in cities.
C. Why some people in big cities are trapped in their home.
D. Ways to fight stress.
72. The word ‘dwellers’ is closest in meaning to _____________ .
A. criminals	B. neighbors	C. workers	D. inhabitants
73. According to the author, architectural changes have affected city life by _________ .
A. giving each person a say in planning
B. separating long-established communities
 	C. forcing people to live on top of each other
D. making people move to the suburbs
74. The author’s general argument is that urban life would be improved by __________ .
 	 	A. moving people out of tower blocks
B. rebuilding old buildings
C. building community centres
D. preserving existing social systems
75. What does the word ‘its’ refer to?
A. behaviour	B. concern	C. community	D. lack
