1. Cách chia.
a) Đối với những động từ có quy tắc

nếu động từ tận cùng bằng e thì chỉ cần thêm d

*Nếu động từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm +Y , thì đổi Y thành I , rồi thêm ED

Thì quá khứ đơn thường được dùng :
Để diễn tả một hành động , sự kiện hay tình huống sảy ra ở một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ và đã chấm dứt.
Ex: I was a student in 1999.
 We lived in Ha noi when I was 5 years old.
Diễn tả một chuỗi các hành động trong quá khứ.
Ex : My uncle took me to a piano concert lastnight.It was a pleasant everning. I met many interesting people. The weather was nice. I really enjoyed the concert.
Thì quá khứ đơn thường được sử dụng với trạng từ chỉ thời gian :

Cách chia.

 2. Cách dùng :
Diễn tả ước muốn một tình huống không có thật ở hiện tại , tình huống này được diễn tả bằng thì quá khứ đơn ( ở đây không ám chỉ tình huống sảy ra trong quá khứ, mà nó chỉ cho thấy tình huống đó là không thật)

Irag, the country famous for the story Arabian Nights, is in the Southeast Asia. It is not a large country , about 437,072 square kilometers with the population of 25,374,691 people ( July 2004) . The capital of Iraq is the city of Baghdad, which is said to be the cot of the most attractive fairy stories of the East. The monetary unit of Iraq is the dinar.
Beside the story Arabian Nights, Babylon, is another symbol of this country. It was the place where the well- known Babylon hanging garden used to be located. Although the garden no longer exists, it was recognized one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.
